Introduction

 

Founded in 2012, the Department of Biology of South University of Science and Technology has attracted a group of high-level talents from home and abroad in just five years. It has initially established an international high-level teaching and research team with senior professors as its leader, associate professors with active scientific research and strong momentum of development as its backbone, and young assistant professors as its vanguard. All the professors introduced by the Department of Biology have Ph.D. degrees. They graduated from world-class universities. They have engaged in post-doctoral research in well-known overseas universities or research institutes, or obtained teaching positions in world-class universities. Eight of these professors had been granted tenure positions in well-known overseas universities or scientific research institutions before joining USST. So far, there are more than 350 faculty members in the Department of Biology, including 2 academicians of the American Academy of Sciences, 5 members of the Thousand People Program, 7 members of the Youth Thousand People Program, 4 scholars of the Yangtze River, 3 members of the National/Overseas Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 winner of the Tanjiazhen Prize for Innovation in Life Sciences, 1 young chief scientist of the National Major Scientific Research Program, 1 member of the Hundred People Program of the Chinese Academy of The Special Support Plan includes 1 million leading talents, 1 million engineering young top talents, 2 scientific and technological innovation young top talents, 1 excellent young talents introduction plan of Peking University (100 people plan), 1 national talent of Shenzhen and 20 peacock plan. In addition, the Department of Biology of Southern University of Science and Technology has attracted a team of young PhD and postdoctoral engineers to assist in teaching and scientific research. There are more than 300 assistants in teaching and scientific research, including 2 in Peacock Program and 6 in Shenzhen High Level Reserve.

The research direction covers cell microenvironment and signal transduction, developmental biology and related diseases, structural biology, systems biology, neurobiology, plant biology and other fields, focusing on basic research in the frontier areas of life sciences and basic applied research related to life sciences, and actively encouraging interdisciplinary research.

The research direction of cell microenvironment, signal transduction and disease will focus on such important human health issues as cancer, diabetes mellitus, skeletal development, regeneration and homeostasis, neurological diseases, infectious diseases and public health. At the molecular, cellular, tissue and animal level, combined with structural biology research, the molecular mechanism of these diseases will be explored and clarified thoroughly and systematically. These studies have found new targets for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. This direction has been approved for the construction of Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Cell Microenvironment. Molecular drugs and pharmacological research will aim at tumors, neurodegeneration and other diseases, develop, identify and further synthesize small molecular compounds with anti-tumor and neuroprotective effects, and establish intelligent organic synthesis systems with bionic functions. The research direction of developmental biology and related diseases is not only to study the basic developmental principles at the molecular level, but also to build disease models using model organisms, focusing on osteoblasts and chromatin abnormalities. Bioinformatics and computational biology research is focused on diseases, including epidemic diseases such as influenza, AIDS and complex diseases such as cancer, obesity and diabetes. Through global non-linear analysis and related biological network research, the basic theory of multi-level integration of complex diseases is explored. It will also use synthetic biology, quantitative biology, biooptics, photogenetics and biomechanics to study the self-renewal and directional differentiation of stem cells, the schema formation mechanism of bacteria and mammalian cells, so as to develop the three-dimensional schema formation of stem cells and the means of tissue engineering, and determine the dynamics of bladder stem cells and other target genes.

In terms of teaching, three undergraduate majors of biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics have been established. Bioscience and biotechnology are basic specialties of life science, and bioinformatics is a cross specialty. In order to be in line with the international standards, the Department of Biology has been working at various levels and channels to improve the scientific research level and international visibility of the University of South Science. In teaching, we insist on the key professors giving lectures at the front line of teaching, widely using the international advanced English original textbooks and bilingual teaching in both Chinese and English. Students are encouraged to enter the teaching laboratory to participate in research or competition of scientific research projects, to give full play to students’learning initiative, and to strengthen innovative thinking and skills training. In 2016, our department was selected as one of the key disciplines with high advantages in Guangdong Province.

Among the 2016-2017 graduates, many students have been offered opportunities to pursue further studies in outstanding overseas universities, including the Ivy League universities, Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Washington University of St. Louis, Washington University of Seattle, Gottingen University of Germany, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Nanyang University of Technology of Singapore and other top universities in the world. Our school also actively develops advanced educational resources at home and abroad, and cooperates with high-level universities and research institutes at home and abroad to train Postgraduates of master’s degree and doctor’s degree. Since 2015, the University of South Science and Technology has jointly enrolled and trained postgraduates with Beijing University, Harbin University of Technology, Singapore National University, Hong Kong University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Baptist University, Macao University, Birmingham University and other well-known universities at home and abroad, and set up a “high-level Postgraduate Scholarship for science and engineering” to provide financial support, exchange opportunities and student creation for postgraduates. Industry innovation, table service, etc. In September 2015, the Department of Biology and the University of Macau signed an agreement to jointly train and recruit a number of doctoral students, which was the first batch of doctoral students in Nankai University and achieved zero breakthrough.

Life science has become an important subject of Natural Science in the 21st century. The development of life science concerns the health of life and the happiness of people’s livelihood. Nowadays, biology and health industry has become a new driving force to promote the development of the world economy, and also a strategic emerging industry that Shenzhen has focused on cultivating. The discovery of frontier life science is the basis of the development of biology and health industry. The Department of Biology aims to create an international advanced teaching and scientific research base, cultivate top-notch innovative talents and scientific research as its mission, and strive to achieve rapid development in scientific research achievements, personnel training, team building, discipline building and scientific and technological industrialization. According to the existing development plan, the University of South Science and Technology will build the College of Life Science and Health on the basis of the Department of Biology, which will become one of the six colleges of South Science University. The College of Life Sciences and Health will concentrate on the direction of discipline development from an international perspective, based on the needs of the times, encourage the development of interdisciplinary disciplines, attach equal importance to both original research and R&D applications, create research, technology and products with international influence, train leading international talents, train innovative talents for the development of biological industry, and serve the region. The development of national and global life sciences and health economy industries provides a platform and support for knowledge innovation and technology support to promote human health and social and economic development.
