6 SUSTech Research Teams Selected for “Pearl River Talent Program”

Recently, six SUSTech teams were successfully selected by the Guangdong Province for its “Pearl River Talent Program” which consists of introducing innovative business team projects. The successful SUSTech participants received a total of 1 billion of funding, among a total of 45 approved innovation and entrepreneurship team projects, and the university’s approval rate in the province among the best.
A total of three industrial teams and three basic research teams were selected. The industry team includes: academician Liu Ke as the leader of the “new methanol-based fuel internal combustion engine R & D and industrialization team”, which received 10 million yuan in funding; Professor Zhao Yisheng as the leader of the “Super-strong nano-polycrystalline material research, development and industrialization innovation”, which received 10 million yuan in funding; Professor Wang Haijiang as the leader of the” fuel cell core components development”, which received 20 million yuan in funding. The basic research team includes: academician Yu Dapeng as the leader of the “quantum science and engineering team”, which received 20 million yuan; associate professor Zhai Jixian as the leader of the “plant apparent genetic mechanism of overseas youth talent research team”, which received 20 million yuan; and associate professor Guo Chuanfei as the leader of the “ultra-flexible mechanical and electrical team”, which received 20 million yuan in funding.
In 2009, Guangdong province was the first in the country to implement the “Pearl River Talent Program” with an annual investment of 850 million yuan , to sponsor domestic and overseas world-class innovative entrepreneurial talents. In July 2016 Guangdong’s Provincial Science and Technology Department began to organize the 2016 edition of the program and introduce a sixth batch of innovative business team project. That year SUSTech also had 6 teams selected, making a total of 12 teams in the past 2 years.
Background: SUSTech’s six selected team profile
Liu Ke’s team:
Academician Liu Ke is the leader of the “new methanol-based fuel internal combustion engine R & D and industrialization team”. The core research direction of the project is “methanol-based fuel as a replacement for diesel.” The project development strategy is divided into two steps: the first step is to achieve the existing diesel engine applicability transformation technology. The second step is to produce a more efficient methanol-based new internal combustion engine based on the existing diesel engine. The goal is to achieve a significant breakthrough in the field of internal combustion engines based on methanol-based fuel, as it is expected to solve China’s oil shortage and reduce diesel engine emissions which contribute significantly to air pollution. The target is to be successful and offer an alternative to the diesel market in 3 years.
Professor Zhao Yisheng’s team：
Professor Zhao Yisheng is the leader of the “Super-strong nano-polycrystalline material research, development and industrialization innovation” project. His team aims to explore the high temperature and high pressure preparation of super-hard ultra-wear-resistant nano-materials to promote the technology and its energy efficiency in the huge application potential. The implementation of the project will be based on its own patented technology for China and Shenzhen, and hopefully create more independent intellectual property rights in fields such as high-performance cutting tools and drilling products to fill the domestic and international gap. This project will greatly improve the precision and processing consistency of the materials, and it is expected to break the monopoly position of the currently imported tools and promote the development of the high-end manufacturing industry. The application of the super-hard materials on the drilling teeth can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce energy costs and bring considerable economic benefits.
Professor Wang Haijiang’ team:
Professor Wang Haijiang is the leader of the “fuel cell core components development” project. Membrane electrodes are the most important core function part of PEMFC which determines the performance and life of a battery stack. Its material synthesis, structure optimization and its preparation process are the three core key technologies of high performance and low cost membrane electrode development. The project aims to break through several aspects of performance, cost and lifespan, divided into four sub-topics to carry out research on the continuous preparation of membrane electrodes. The aim of the project is to realize large-scale production of high-performance low-cost membrane electrodes and become the main manufacturer in the fuel cell industry.
Academician Yu Dapeng’s team:
Academician Yu Dapeng is the leader of the “quantum science and engineering team”. The main research contents of the project are as follows: 1) Research on superconducting quantum bit and quantum chip based on the Josephson effect; 2) Solid state quantum device and quantum computing chip based on quantum dot (line), graphene, topological insulator material and other systems; 3) New quantum algorithms related to solid quantum computation, theoretical prediction and design of quantum logic devices, theoretical research on quantum error correction; 4) Controllable preparation of quantum materials, quantum transport, and characterization of optical properties. The implementation of this project would not only solve a series of major quantum scientific and physical problems and strengthen China’s physics research in international research, but also to achieve a major breakthrough in the field of quantum computer technology and obtain independent intellectual property rights in quantum computing technology.
Associate professor Zhai Jixian’s team
Professor Zhai Jixian is the leader of the “plant apparent genetic mechanism of overseas youth excellence research team”. The main contents of the project include the epigenetic analysis of genetic exchange and recombination, the relationship between the advanced structure of chromatin and gene silencing, the regulation mechanism of co-transcription events in plant gene silencing, the analytic and molecular mechanism of regulatory protein structure in gene silencing, the mechanism of RNA transcription in the regulation of gene silencing at the post-transcriptional level, the distribution and transport of small RNAs in subcellular levels, and the apparent genetic regulation of plant disease resistance genes. The project is expected to explain from the perspective of epigenetics the impact of crop quality improvement of molecular control mechanism for crop cross breeding and differentiation optimization to provide a theoretical basis. At the same time it will help to cultivate domestic and foreign academic influence with the help of the construction of high-end botanical laboratories.
Associate Professor Guo Chuanfei’s team:
Associate professor Guo Chuanfei is the leader of the “ultra-flexible mechanical and electrical team”. The project aims to develop flexible, safe, lightweight and intelligent prostheses through the implementation of several sub-topics of ultra-flexible electronic systems, software robots, biological health monitoring, new energy power systems and constant temperature systems. Its expected role is to boost the application of a new type of prosthetic technology to improve the living standards of physically handicapped persons. The implementation of the project will enable Guangdong province to position itself as a leader in the smart flexible robot technology and new materials technology, and assist industrial upgrading, boosting the flexible electronics and robot industries.
