Biological Sciences Major

 

Description - Biological sciences are the study of living organisms to address many of the most important and fundamental questions about the world. Originated from the study of natural environment, plants, and animals, contemporary biological sciences are concerned the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms.

 

This major at SUSTech is designed for students seeking a broad-based training in modern biology. The curriculum covers a broad range of courses, including biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, microbiology, immunology, plant physiology, animal physiology, neurobiology as well as theory-guided experimental practice. Students graduating from this program will have a deep understanding of modern biology, gain a deep appreciation of the workings of life and the natural world, and will also be able to acquire valuable experimental skills as well as skills in analysis, organization and communication.

 

Learning Outcomes- Graduates from the Biological Sciences programs will have demonstrated:

1. A clear understanding of the major biological conceptsand awareness of how these are connected to various areas of the biological sciences and are applicable to everyday life.

2.An ability to develop and critique hypotheses and to design experiments, models, and/or calculations to address these hypotheses.

3.The problem solving, analytical, and communication skills.

4.An ability to read, evaluates, interpret, and apply numerical and general scientific information.

5.An ability to read, write, and communicate in English.

6.A familiarity with, and application of safety in good laboratory practices.

 

Careers – The undergraduate major in biological sciences is an excellent first step towards exciting careers in biology and health sciences. Students who complete our degree programs will be well prepared for professional careers in the health sciences as well as for careers in research and education in the basic biological and biomedical fields, and in many other professions.

 

 

Biotechnology Major

 

Description – Biotechnology major is a program that focuses on the application of organisms and biological systems to improve human health, advance agriculture, generate energy, and clean up the environment.Biotechnology major at SUSTech exposes students to both core-concepts and application aspects of biological sciences. Students receive academic training in technologically advanced classrooms and hands-on training in high quality research labs at SUSTECH.

 

Learning Outcomes- Graduates from the Biological Sciences programs will have demonstrated:

Bioinformatics Major

 

Description – Bioinformatics major in SUSTECH keeps pace with this fast-growing field in biology, and the curriculum coversequal amount of course work in biology, mathematics, and computer science. Students will develop skills across these disciplines to manipulate the wealth of data emerging from new technologies relating to genes, genomes, proteins and metabolic pathways.

 

Learning Outcomes- Graduates from the Biological Sciences programs will have demonstrated:

1.A broad understanding of biology.

2.An ability to create computer programs that facilitate bioinformatics.

3.An ability to develop and critique hypotheses and to design experiments, models, and/or calculations to address these hypotheses.

4.The problem solving, analytical, and communication skills.

5.An ability to read, evaluates, interpret, and apply numerical and general scientific information.

6.An ability to read, write, and communicate in English.

 

Careers – Students of bioinformatics major graduates have excellent background for employment in industry, government, and academics.

 

Research Opportunities- Information about research opportunities for Undergraduates

 

Description – The Department of Biology offers Practical and Creativity Courses every semester to provide learning experiences that stretch beyond the classroom and give students practical experience and insight into the way how scientific research are is carried out in the laboratory. Practical and Creativity Courses accept students to start their laboratory training from the 2nd to the 6th semesters.

The Practical Courses aim to provide adequate laboratory training for students who choose Biology as their major field of study. Participating students are introduced to the general theories and principles underlying many of the advanced biological research methods and techniques, and they will also receive adequate hands-on training through participation of supervisors’ research projects. Participants are expected to use some of the techniques learned during these practical courses in their final year undergraduate research projects.

 

On completion of this course, students are expected to:

· Have a basic, practical understanding of the biology research laboratory

· Have an understanding of the general techniques employed carried out in biology laboratory biological research

· Gain practical work experience by applying classroom-learned concepts on the job in assigned lab research work

· Explore the chosen major

· Clarify and evaluate academic and career goals

· The programmed, Experimental study of the origin of life, evolution, and the genetics and physiology of life is the foundation of modern biological sciences
